Since 1986 I have been actively involved as a private music instructor, working with both children and adults. In my practice I work to achieve a balance between solid rudimentary skills such as sight reading, technique, chord theory, and ear training; and more innovative approaches with an emphasis on improvisation, composition and expression. I always seek to encourage in a student a relationship with their music that is inspired and expressively linked to their personal process. When playing classics, I seek to connect the student with the vitality of the period in which the piece was composed, learning about the composer, the historical setting, and the performance venues employed at the time.
 I have a strong background in various popular musical styles and in particular areas of ethnic and world music, which I am able to convey with a very "hands on" teaching approach. I have taught seminars on ensemble playing, music theory and appreciation, as well as synthesizer/MIDI programing and applications.
In addition to piano, I play and can teach basic guitar and hand percussion. I have a fundamental understanding of most orchestra instruments as well as the voice and feel prepared to compose for and rehearse these various members of the orchestra.
My music studio is located in Boulder, Colorado within a short walk from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and North Boulder Park.
